intro
you can't beat a $20 (got it on sale) video camera. sure there are those that say you can beat it but nuts to them. this is a very well documented hack on many sites across the web so i'm not going to go into too much detail.
i first saw this hack on MAKE and then saw the camera in CVS on sale so i picked one up. Naturally the first thing i did was tear it apart to see what was inside.
hardware
i didn't really want to mod a palm connector to make a usb cable so instead i picked up a female type b usb connector from digikey (make sure you order more than just one little usb connector!)
i then decided how to modify the case to install the port. to ensure it doesn't break lose i thru down some JB Weld epoxy.
in the interest of future hacks i wanted to be able to take this thing apart easily. thus i wired up a four pin connector to mate with the usb connector.
software
the whole thing has been put back together and works famously on a windows box. now it's time to get it working on a real os
get the latest
libusb and the lastest
Ops for linux
libusb built without issue and the prebuilt Ops binary ran out of the box. I haven't tried building Ops from source. remember to run Ops as root otherwise you will not be able to connect to the camera.
the windows software is up to version 0.11 and has some amazing features. The linux version is a little behind but still works well. i have backed up the original firmware as well as the individual files so now i can really f this thing up.
with a few clicks up updated the firmware to record at 640x480@30fps. With the time doubling trick i should get ~15-20 minutes of record time.
